Editor's Note

Amy York

Welcome to the latest issue of Tennessee Libraries. This issue features the 2011 Tennessee Bibliography: a list of the books published in the previous year by Tennesseans or in some way about or relating to Tennessee. Maya Berry of Christian Brothers University and Pam Dennis of the University of Memphis compiled this year's list, and they have generously agreed to take on the task again next year. It is particularly difficult to locate books by Tennessee authors, so if you know of one that was published in 2011 (or authored one yourself!), please email Pam ( or Maya (

Scott Cohen brings us an interview with Jenifer Grady, Executive Director of TennShare, who describes her goals for the organization and reveals an item on her Christmas wish list. I'm sad to say that this will be Scott's last interview for a while. For several years now, he has provided us insight into the minds of many fascinating figures in the library world, but Scott has decided to make time for new challenges. The past editors and I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Scott for his excellent contributions. We will be utilizing guest interviewers for the next several issues, so if you would like to contribute an interview to an upcoming issue, or if you have an idea for an interview subject, please use our online submission system

We round out this issue with book reviews, edited by Kathy Campbell, and the columns. There's a lot of love in this issue: Christy Groves reminds us to love our patrons (even when they don't exactly deserve it) and  Karyn Storts-Brinks asks us to show our love for intellectual freedom by joining the fight. David Ratledge tells us about  makerspaces, and Sarah Culp Searles describes how schools libraries support the common core every day.

Many thanks, as always, to assistant editor Kristen West for everything she does to get the issue out on time and for tolerating my last minute brainstorms.

Enjoy this issue of Tennessee Libraries, and happy holidays!
