Call for Articles

Tennessee Libraries is for professional and scholarly research and a forum for the discussion of issues related to library and information services in Tennessee. Tennessee Libraries seeks articles on all types of libraries and library activities and particularly invites the participation of Tennessee and regional librarians and writers who are new to the field of library science.

If you have any questions, please email the editor, Sharon Holderman, at sholderman@tntech.edu.

The following types of articles are considered:

  • Scholarly Articles: These articles including original, qualitative or quantitative research on current library practices or historical analysis of library trends.  Articles should include a literature review, and authors must provide complete references.  Submissions will be reviewed by at least two readers for blind review, which can result in acceptance, revision requests, recommendation for a non peer-reviewed section, or rejection.  Final decisions are made by the editors of this journal.
  • From the Field: Sample topics for these articles include information, studies, surveys, or programs relevant to libraries in Tennessee; case studies and best practice articles; and position pieces about significant library-related issues.
  • Library Histories and Spotlights: These may include comprehensive histories of libraries or library systems or showcases of exceptional Tennessee libraries or library services.  Pictures and other media are highly encouraged.
  • Interviews: These articles include interviews with those connected to Tennessee libraries whose views and thoughts would be interesting to the Tennessee Libraries' readers.  Suggestions for interviewees as well as completed articles are welcome.
  • Book Reviews: Please see the book review guidelines.
  • Other: Not sure if your articles fits in the above categories?  Please submit it to the general category.

Please submit manuscripts to our online submission manager and follow the submission guidelines below.

Submission Deadlines

Articles are accepted on a rolling basis, and articles will be accepted late or pushed to the next issue based on number of articles already accepted and revision needs.  General deadlines for each issue are as follows:

March issue: submit peer-reviewed articles by February 1, all other articles by February 28

June issue: submit peer-reviewed articles by May 1, all other articles by May 31

September issue: submit peer-reviewed articles by August 1, all other articles by August 31

December issue: submit peer-reviewed articles by November 1, all other articles by November 30

Submission Guidelines

All manuscripts and references should be formatted according to guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition. Manuscripts which do not follow these format requirements may be returned to the author for corrections.

  • Citations: type all references at the end of your document with APA formatting; DO NOT use your word processor's footnote/endnote features.
  • Title Page: include the title of the article, your name, affiliation/position, professional address, telephone number, and email address. The author's name should not appear on any other page of the manuscript. Your name and affiliation will be the only information included in the final publication; the other information is for the editors' use.
  • Tables and graphics: these are encouraged, especially color graphics. Interactive media may also be used. Please insert graphics into the text; you will be contacted for the graphics as separate files if your article is accepted.
  • Spelling: Please use your word processing software's spell check program to check your spelling before submitting your manuscript. Watch for typographical errors that are existing words (e.g., form vs. from).
  • Usage: Avoid sexist language. Tennessee Libraries prefers gender-free usage when possible.  Use of first person is preferred to third person.
  •  Electronic submission required for all items.

Following review of the manuscript by the editors and additional readers if appropriate, feedback will be communicated to the author. Accepted papers will be published as soon as space allows. The authors will be informed of the publication date upon acceptance.
